Target: United States Congress
Goal: We call on Congress to grant Washington, D.C. full statehood and end the undemocratic oversight that denies its residents equal rights and representation.
Since the passage of the Home Rule Act in 1973, D.C. has had a locally elected government. However, Congress retains the power to overrule any law passed by the D.C. Council and can even abolish the city's government entirely. The President also controls the D.C. National Guard and can federalize the local police force without local consent.
D.C. residents have no voting senators or representatives in Congress, despite paying federal taxes and fulfilling all the obligations of citizenship. This is taxation without representation—an injustice that contradicts the founding values of our country.
Congress has repeatedly blocked D.C. from enacting the will of its people, including on issues like marijuana legalization and reproductive rights. It's time to end this undemocratic system and grant D.C. full rights as a state.
