Abolish Nuisance Tariffs to Support Workers and Families

Nuisance tariffs are import taxes that disproportionately impact workers and families by raising the cost of essential goods. Despite recent progress in removing 500 such tariffs, hundreds remain, continuing to burden Australians with higher prices and increased compliance costs for businesses.

These tariffs are widely recognized as inefficient, often costing more to administer than the revenue they generate. They hinder access to affordable products like toothbrushes, health items, and household appliances, and exacerbate the cost-of-living crisis faced by many Australians.

As trade negotiations with the US continue, it is crucial that our government stands firm against protectionist measures and prioritizes the well-being of everyday people over outdated economic policies. We urge Treasurer Jim Chalmers and the Albanese Government to finish the job and abolish all remaining nuisance tariffs, ensuring a fairer, more just economy for all.
