Recent reports have revealed that foreign knowledge workers in Japan, hired through temporary staffing agencies, are being assigned to inappropriate and menial labor despite holding specialized visas. This exploitation undermines both labor rights and Japan's commitment to fair treatment of foreign professionals.

Foreign professionals come to Japan under knowledge worker visas with the expectation of contributing their expertise in engineering, humanities, and international services. However, investigations have shown that some staffing agencies are misassigning these workers to menial labor, violating the spirit and letter of their visa status. This not only exploits vulnerable workers but also damages Japan’s international reputation as a welcoming and fair society.

We urge the Immigration Services Agency and the Japanese government to act decisively. The current lack of oversight allows unscrupulous agencies to profit from exploitation, while foreign workers face precarious conditions, uncertainty, and even threats to their legal status. Japan must uphold its international commitments and ensure that all workers, regardless of nationality, are treated with dignity and respect.
