Target: Speaker of the House, House Leadership, and all Members of the U.S. House of Representatives
Goal: We call on House leadership to immediately allow a full floor vote on a comprehensive ban on congressional stock trading.
For too long, members of Congress have been allowed to buy and sell stocks while in office, creating glaring conflicts of interest and eroding public trust in our democracy. The Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act of 2012 was a step in the right direction, but its weak penalties and lack of enforcement have failed to stop abuses. Fines are minimal, and violations go unpunished.
Recent bipartisan efforts to ban congressional stock trading have gained momentum, but leadership continues to block these bills from reaching the House floor. This is unacceptable. The American people deserve representatives who work for them, not for their own portfolios. A discharge petition is now being used to force a vote, and we must show our support for this crucial step toward ethical government.
We demand a prompt, public vote on a strong ban prohibiting members of Congress from trading individual stocks. Anything less is a betrayal of the public trust.
