Target: Prime Minister Mark Carney, the Government of Canada, and international coalition partners
Goal: Ensure that any peace agreement in Ukraine prioritizes Ukrainian sovereignty, human rights, and self-determination, and is not dictated by foreign powers without the full participation of the Ukrainian people.
The recent Alaska summit between President Trump and President Putin, held without the participation of Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, ended without a ceasefire or concrete path toward ending the war in Ukraine. While diplomatic efforts are welcome, we are deeply concerned that negotiations may prioritize geopolitical interests over the rights and voices of Ukrainians themselves.
History shows that peace agreements imposed without the meaningful participation of those most affected are rarely just or sustainable. The Ukrainian people must have the central role in determining their future, with their human rights and sovereignty fully respected. We urge the Canadian government and its international partners to reject any settlement that is not rooted in justice, accountability, and the will of the Ukrainian people.
We call for transparent negotiations, robust support for Ukrainian civil society, and a commitment to international law and human rights. Only by centering these principles can we hope for a truly just and lasting peace.
