Target: US Congress, President Joe Biden, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Goal: We call on the US Congress and the Biden Administration to urgently restore and expand funding for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), implement robust climate action policies, and provide immediate disaster relief to affected regi
Hurricane Erin has rapidly intensified into a Category 5 storm, threatening catastrophic impacts across the Caribbean and US East Coast. The National Hurricane Center warns of life-threatening floods, landslides, and dangerous surf conditions, while the Atlantic hurricane season is predicted to be more intense than ever.
Despite these escalating threats, NOAA and the National Hurricane Center have faced budget cuts and layoffs, undermining our ability to forecast and respond to disasters. Meanwhile, the root causes of these supercharged storms—rising sea temperatures and climate change driven by fossil fuel emissions—continue to go unaddressed by policymakers.
Communities in the Caribbean, coastal US states, and beyond deserve protection, relief, and a just transition to a climate-resilient future. We demand immediate action to restore and expand disaster response funding, invest in climate adaptation and mitigation, and ensure that those most affected by hurricanes receive the resources they need.
