Protect Immigrant Children: Uphold and Strengthen the Flores Settlement Agreement

Target: U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Congress

Goal: To urge the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Congress to uphold, enforce, and strengthen the Flores Settlement Agreement, ensuring the humane treatment and swift release of immigrant children from detention.

A recent federal court ruling has rejected attempts to dismantle the Flores Settlement Agreement, a critical safeguard for immigrant children in U.S. custody. This agreement ensures that children are protected from prolonged detention and inhumane conditions. We must act now to defend and reinforce these protections.

The Flores Settlement Agreement, established in 1997, is a cornerstone of legal protections for immigrant children in federal custody. It mandates that children be held in licensed, child-appropriate facilities and released to family members or guardians as quickly as possible. Despite its importance, there have been ongoing attempts to terminate or undermine this agreement, most recently by the Trump administration.

Judge Dolly Gee's recent ruling reaffirmed that the government has not provided sufficient grounds to end the Flores Settlement. This decision is a victory for immigrant rights, but the fight is not over. Reports continue to surface of violations, including prolonged and punitive detention of children at border facilities.

We call on the Department of Homeland Security and Congress to not only uphold the Flores Settlement but also to strengthen its enforcement and expand its protections. Every child deserves safety, dignity, and swift reunification with family. We demand an end to the cruel and unnecessary detention of immigrant children.
