Target: President Donald Trump, Secretary of Defense, Governor Patrick Morrisey of West Virginia, and Members of Congress
Goal: We call on federal and state officials to immediately halt the arming and expansion of National Guard deployments in Washington, DC, and to respect the rights and safety of DC residents.
On August 11, 2025, President Trump ordered the deployment of roughly 800 National Guard troops to Washington, DC, citing concerns about 'violent gangs' and homelessness, despite data showing that violent crime in DC has reached its lowest point in over 30 years. The deployment was followed by the federalization of DC police and a request for an additional 300-400 National Guard personnel from West Virginia.
Now, reports indicate that some Guard members may soon be authorized to carry weapons while patrolling the city. This militarized response is not only disproportionate to the reality on the ground, but also undermines the rights of DC residents, heightens tensions, and sets a dangerous precedent for the use of military force in civilian communities.
We urge federal and state leaders to prioritize community-based solutions, respect local governance, and immediately cease the escalation of armed force in Washington, DC.
