Target: U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, and Congressional Transportation Committees
Goal: We call on federal regulators and lawmakers to investigate and prevent airlines from manipulating capacity to artificially inflate airfares, and to ensure that air travel remains affordable and accessible.
After months of lower airfares, prices are spiking again as airlines aggressively reduce the number of flights, creating an artificial scarcity that drives up ticket costs. The latest consumer price index shows a 4% jump in airfares in July alone, reversing the downward trend seen earlier this year.
These capacity cuts are much steeper than in previous years, with domestic flights down 6% in August compared to July. This is a clear strategy by airlines to boost profits at the expense of consumers. As travel demand rebounds, working people and families are being priced out of essential travel, while airline executives see record profits.
We demand that regulators and lawmakers take immediate action to stop this manipulation, investigate anti-competitive practices, and ensure that air travel remains a public good accessible to all—not just a luxury for the privileged few.
