Stop the Militarization of Washington, D.C.: Keep the National Guard Unarmed

We are deeply concerned by reports that National Guard troops stationed in Washington, D.C. may soon be ordered to carry weapons. This escalation, following President Trump's call for a federal security surge, risks blurring the lines between military and civilian law enforcement and threatens the rights and safety of D.C. residents.

The National Guard has been performing administrative duties and vehicle patrols, serving as a visible but unarmed presence. Arming these troops, who lack community-policing training, could lead to unnecessary violence and intimidation, undermining trust between the public and those tasked with their protection.

Local officials have already voiced their opposition to this militarized approach. We stand with them in demanding that the federal government prioritize de-escalation, transparency, and respect for civil liberties. The use of military force in civilian spaces sets a dangerous precedent and is not a solution to the challenges our communities face.

We call on the Department of Defense, the Army, and the President to immediately halt any plans to arm National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., and to commit to non-militarized, community-based solutions for public safety.
