Address the Rental Shortage Crisis: End Tariffs on Building Materials and Invest in Affordable Housing

Target: U.S. Congress, President of the United States, and Local City Officials

Goal: We call on federal and local policymakers to take immediate action to eliminate harmful tariffs, invest in affordable housing, and ensure everyone has a safe, affordable place to live.

Major U.S. cities like Orlando, Philadelphia, and San Antonio are facing severe apartment rental shortages. Recent tariffs on building materials, rising construction costs, and declining multifamily construction permits are making it harder for people to find affordable housing.

The July 2025 Rent Report from Realtor.com® shows that rental housing shortages are worsening in major U.S. metros. The decline in multifamily housing permits is largely due to economic pressures on developers, including President Trump's tariffs on key building materials. These tariffs have driven up construction costs, making it harder to build new apartments at a time when falling rents and increased demand are putting pressure on the rental market.

With fewer apartments being built, working families, students, and low-income residents are left with fewer options and higher rents. This crisis is preventable. We urge policymakers to end harmful tariffs, invest in affordable housing construction, and protect renters from skyrocketing costs.
