Stop the Federal Takeover of Washington, DC Policing

Target: President of the United States, West Virginia Governor, Congress, and the Department of Justice

Goal: We call on federal and state officials to immediately halt the deployment of National Guard troops to Washington, DC, and to respect the authority of the locally elected government and police department.

The recent deployment of West Virginia National Guard troops to Washington, DC, represents an alarming escalation in federal control over local law enforcement. This move undermines the autonomy of DC residents and sets a dangerous precedent for the use of military force in civilian affairs.

The Trump administration's decision to deploy 300-400 West Virginia National Guard troops to Washington, DC, under the pretense of public safety is a direct affront to the principles of local governance and civil liberties. This action follows a pattern of federal overreach, including the attempted installation of an emergency police commissioner and the federalization of the DC police force.

Washington, DC, residents have the right to self-governance and to determine the best path forward for public safety in their community. The use of out-of-state National Guard troops and federal agents to police the city, without the consent of local leaders or residents, is deeply troubling and risks escalating tensions rather than fostering safety.

We urge all responsible officials to reverse this decision, withdraw federal and out-of-state forces, and restore full control of the Metropolitan Police Department to its local leadership. The safety and rights of DC residents must not be sacrificed for political posturing or authoritarian control.
