Defend New York: Reject Federal Takeover of Our Police Department

Target: President of the United States, U.S. Congress, and New York City officials
Goal: To prevent any federal intervention or takeover of the New York Police Department and to uphold local democratic control over our city's law enforcement.
New York City is a beacon of diversity, resilience, and local democracy. The suggestion that the federal government could take control of our police department, as has been attempted in Washington, D.C., is an affront to our values and our autonomy. Even those critical of the NYPD agree: this city will not stand for a federal occupation or the imposition of martial law by executive order.
We have seen the dangers of federal overreach in other cities, often targeting communities led by Black mayors and cities that have made significant progress in reducing crime. New York’s safety and future must be determined by New Yorkers, not by political stunts from Washington.
We call on all elected officials, regardless of party, to publicly oppose any federal intervention in NYC policing. We demand respect for our city’s sovereignty and the will of its people. New York is not a testing ground for authoritarian tactics. We are united in defending our city’s right to self-determination.
