Target: U.S. Congress, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), United Nations, and Caribbean governments
Goal: We call on government leaders and international agencies to immediately increase disaster relief funding, restore and expand meteorological services, and take bold steps to address the root causes of climate change.
Hurricane Erin’s rapid intensification into a Category 5 storm is a dire warning for the Caribbean and beyond. With sustained winds of 160 miles per hour and the potential for catastrophic flooding and landslides, millions of lives are at risk. Despite these dangers, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other vital agencies have faced budget cuts and layoffs, undermining our ability to forecast and prepare for such storms.
Scientists have long warned that climate change—driven by the burning of fossil fuels—is increasing the frequency and severity of hurricanes. Rising sea temperatures are fueling storms like Erin, putting vulnerable communities in greater danger every year. Yet, instead of investing in preparedness and resilience, critical resources have been slashed.
We demand urgent action to protect the Caribbean and all communities threatened by extreme weather. This means restoring full funding to NOAA and other agencies, investing in disaster relief and infrastructure, and taking strong measures to address the climate crisis at its source.
