Recent calls to deploy the National Guard in Baltimore as a response to crime have sparked heated debate. While some advocate for military involvement, Governor Wes Moore has stood firm in refusing to use the National Guard for municipal policing, emphasizing the need for holistic, community-driven solutions. We believe public safety must be rooted in justice, equity, and investment in communities—not in military force.

Deploying the National Guard to Baltimore is not the answer to our city’s challenges. Military personnel are not trained for the complex, community-oriented work of public safety. We have seen time and again that militarizing our neighborhoods can escalate tensions, erode trust, and disproportionately harm Black and working-class communities.

Instead, Baltimore needs investments in mental health services, affordable housing, youth programs, restorative justice initiatives, and violence interruption. These are the strategies that have been shown to reduce violence and build stronger, safer communities. Governor Wes Moore’s refusal to deploy the National Guard is a step in the right direction, but we must go further to ensure our safety policies are rooted in care, not force.

We urge Maryland’s leaders to listen to the voices of Baltimore residents who are demanding real solutions—not more policing, not more militarization, but real investments in our communities.
