Target: U.S. Congress, Department of Justice, Smithsonian Board of Regents
Goal: Restore local control to Washington, D.C., end the federal takeover of its police force, and ensure the Smithsonian remains free from political interference.
President Trump's recent deployment of National Guard troops and federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. represents a grave threat to local self-governance and democratic norms. The people of D.C. deserve the right to govern their own city, free from federal intervention and militarization of their streets.
At the same time, the White House's announced review of Smithsonian museums and exhibits, with the explicit aim of removing so-called 'divisive or partisan narratives,' risks whitewashing American history and suppressing marginalized voices. Our museums must remain committed to scholarly rigor and the truthful presentation of our nation's past, including its injustices and struggles for equality.
We urge Congress and all relevant authorities to immediately halt the federal occupation of D.C.'s police force, defend the principle of home rule, and protect the Smithsonian from political censorship. Democracy, honest history, and community self-determination are not negotiable.
