Goal: We call on the US government to uphold peace, respect Taiwan's right to self-determination, and reject any actions or agreements that undermine the democratic will of the Taiwanese people.
Recent news reports reveal ongoing discussions between US and Chinese leaders regarding the future of Taiwan. While diplomatic assurances have been made, the people of Taiwan continue to face threats to their sovereignty and democracy. The US must not treat Taiwan as a bargaining chip in great-power politics. Instead, the US government should:
- Publicly support the right of the Taiwanese people to determine their own future, free from coercion or threats of force.
- Oppose any military escalation or intervention in the Taiwan Strait.
- Engage in transparent, multilateral diplomacy that centers the voices and interests of the people of Taiwan.
- Reject any policy or agreement that legitimizes the use of force or undermines democratic self-governance.
Peace and stability in the region depend on respecting the rights and aspirations of all peoples. We urge US leaders to take a stand for democracy, peace, and self-determination.
