Goal: We call on Governor Morrisey to immediately halt the deployment of West Virginia National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., and to respect the rights and self-determination of D.C. residents.
On Friday, Governor Patrick Morrisey announced the mobilization of 300 to 400 West Virginia National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., following a request from the Trump administration. This deployment, framed as a response to crime and homelessness, threatens to escalate tensions, undermine local control, and set a dangerous precedent for the use of military force in civilian matters.
Washington, D.C. residents and their local government have the right to self-determination and to address their challenges without federal or state military intervention. Deploying troops to police civilian populations does not address the root causes of homelessness or crime, and risks violating civil liberties and democratic norms.
We urge Governor Morrisey to reconsider this decision and to prioritize solutions that respect the autonomy and dignity of all communities involved.
