Target: Prime Minister of Canada, Minister of International Trade, and Parliament of Canada
Goal: We call on the federal government to adopt trade policies that protect all Canadian regions equally, ensure fair treatment for workers in resource sectors, and foster genuine national unity.
Canada’s approach to trade disputes, including the imposition of tariffs and export taxes, has disproportionately harmed workers and communities in the Prairies while protecting industries in Central Canada. Recent decisions to guarantee supply management for dairy and poultry farmers—while leaving oil, gas, potash, uranium, and canola producers exposed to retaliatory tariffs—exemplify a pattern of regional favoritism.
Policies that pit one region against another undermine national unity and economic justice. Export taxes on Western resources, retaliatory tariffs that hurt Prairie farmers, and protectionist measures that benefit a few at the expense of many are not the way forward. We need trade policies that are fair, transparent, and responsive to the needs of all Canadians, not just those in politically powerful provinces.
We urge the federal government to work collaboratively with all provinces, prioritize the livelihoods of workers in every region, and ensure that trade negotiations and retaliatory measures do not sacrifice the economic future of the West for the benefit of Central Canada.
