Target: U.S. Congress, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the White House
Goal: We urge government officials and agencies to restore and expand funding for hurricane monitoring, emergency response, and climate adaptation, while taking bold action to address climate change.
Hurricane Erin, now a Category 4 storm, is threatening the Caribbean with destructive winds, flash floods, and landslides. Communities in the northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico are at immediate risk, while dangerous waves and erosion threaten the U.S. East Coast. The Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be more intense than normal, a trend driven by rising sea temperatures caused by fossil fuel emissions.
Despite these escalating dangers, critical agencies like NOAA have suffered budget cuts and layoffs, undermining our ability to forecast, prepare for, and respond to disasters. This is unacceptable. The safety and resilience of millions depend on robust public investment in science, emergency infrastructure, and climate action.
We call on our leaders to take urgent steps to protect lives and build climate resilience now and for future generations.
