Target: U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Congress, Office of Refugee Resettlement
Goal: We call on federal agencies and lawmakers to uphold and strengthen protections for immigrant children in custody, ensuring their humane treatment and legal rights.
The Flores Settlement Agreement, established in 1997, sets vital standards for the detention, release, and treatment of immigrant children in federal custody. Despite repeated attempts by the Trump administration to terminate these protections, Judge Dolly Gee has reaffirmed the necessity of the Flores Agreement, stating there is 'nothing new under the sun' to justify ending it.
Immigrant children are among the most vulnerable populations in our society. The Flores Agreement ensures that children are not held in unsafe or inhumane conditions and that their rights are respected while in government custody. Attempts to weaken or eliminate these protections put thousands of children at risk of harm, trauma, and neglect.
We urge policymakers and federal agencies to respect the court's decision and commit to upholding and strengthening the Flores Settlement Agreement. The humane treatment of children should never be up for debate. We demand continued oversight, transparency, and accountability in the care of immigrant children.
