Target: U.S. Congress, Department of State, and President of the United States
Goal: Urge U.S. policymakers to maintain strong sanctions on Russian oil and gas projects and prevent corporations from undermining efforts for peace and accountability.
Russia’s latest decree invites Exxon Mobil and other foreign investors to reclaim their stakes in the Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project, but only if they actively work to lift sanctions imposed after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. This move is a blatant attempt to use corporate interests to undermine international efforts to end the war and hold Russia accountable for its actions.
Sanctions on Russia’s oil and gas sector are a critical tool for reducing the Kremlin’s ability to finance its war machine. Oil and gas revenues make up a quarter of Russia’s federal budget, and loosening these restrictions would directly enable continued aggression against Ukraine. Allowing corporations to lobby for sanctions relief in pursuit of profit sets a dangerous precedent and puts peace, justice, and human rights at risk.
We call on U.S. leaders to stand firm: keep sanctions in place, prevent corporations from lobbying for their removal, and prioritize peace over profit.
