Goal: We urge the U.S. government to prioritize democratic processes, inclusive dialogue, and respect for international norms before considering recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
Senator Ted Cruz has urged the U.S. administration to recognize Somaliland as an independent nation, citing U.S. security interests and Somaliland’s cooperation in regional counterterrorism and trade. While these strategic partnerships are significant, the decision to recognize a new state must be guided by the will of the people, respect for international law, and a commitment to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
Unilateral recognition without broad-based democratic consent risks undermining the right to self-determination for all Somalis and could escalate regional tensions. The U.S. should not set a precedent of recognizing breakaway regions without robust democratic processes and consensus among all affected communities.
