Demand Immediate Action to Protect Abducted Ukrainian Children

Target: U.S. President, U.S. Congress, U.S. State Department, United Nations, International Criminal Court

Goal: We call on the U.S. government and international community to take urgent and concrete steps to ensure the safe return of all abducted Ukrainian children and to hold those responsible accountable.

Thousands of Ukrainian children have reportedly been abducted by Russian authorities since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Recent reports confirm that these children are being taken from their families, stripped of their language and identity, and, in some cases, listed for adoption in Russia. Despite international condemnation and an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court, there has been little meaningful action to secure the safe return of these children.

Since February 2022, Ukrainian authorities estimate that over 20,000 children have been forcibly taken from Ukraine by Russian authorities. These children have been separated from their families, denied the right to speak their language, and subjected to forced assimilation.

The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin for these acts, which meet the United Nations' definition of genocide. Yet, credible reports indicate that the abductions continue, with some children being listed for adoption in Russia—a practice described as 'despicable and appalling' by the U.S. State Department.

The world cannot stand by while children are stolen from their homes and stripped of their identities. We demand urgent action to protect these children, reunite them with their families, and hold perpetrators accountable.

Key Demands

The U.S. government must publicly condemn the abduction of Ukrainian children and recognize these acts as violations of international law.
The U.S. and its allies must increase diplomatic and economic pressure on Russia until all abducted Ukrainian children are safely returned to their families.
The United Nations must establish an independent commission to investigate and document the abductions, forced adoptions, and cultural erasure of Ukrainian children.
The International Criminal Court must prioritize prosecution of those responsible for the forced transfer and assimilation of Ukrainian children.
The U.S. must provide increased support and resources to Ukrainian and international organizations working to locate and reunite abducted children with their families.
