Target: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, National Cemetery Administration, and the Alaska State Legislature
Goal: To secure permanent protection, educational recognition, and cross-cultural commemoration for the graves and legacy of Soviet pilots buried in Alaska.
Between 1942 and 1945, the United States and the Soviet Union stood together against Nazi Germany. Under the Lend-Lease Programme, nearly 8,000 American aircraft were delivered to the Soviet Union, with Soviet pilots training in Alaska before flying the planes to the Eastern Front. Many of these pilots perished in harsh conditions and were laid to rest at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
For decades, the existence of this cemetery was largely unrecognized, and only in recent years has its historical significance begun to be acknowledged. These graves are not just markers of individual loss, but symbols of international solidarity and the sacrifices made in the fight against fascism.
We call on the relevant authorities to ensure these graves are permanently protected, that their history is incorporated into educational curricula, and that opportunities for cross-cultural remembrance are expanded. Let us honor these airmen and the spirit of cooperation they represent.
