Protect Caribbean Communities: Invest in Climate Resilience and Restore NOAA Funding

Related Article: Tropical storm turns into hurricane as it barrels towards Caribbean - thejournal.ie - Saturday, August 16, 2025, 2:58:04 AM Eastern Daylight Time

Target: President of the United States, U.S. Congress, and FEMA

Goal: We demand immediate restoration of NOAA funding, robust investment in climate resilience for Caribbean communities, and urgent action to address the root causes of climate change.

Hurricane Erin, the first major storm of the Atlantic season, threatens the Caribbean with heavy rain, flooding, and dangerous surf. As climate change fuels more intense hurricanes, budget cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) undermine our ability to forecast and respond to these disasters.

As Hurricane Erin barrels toward the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, communities brace for flash floods, landslides, and life-threatening conditions. This storm is a stark reminder that climate change is making hurricanes more frequent and severe, endangering lives and livelihoods across the region.

Yet, the agencies responsible for tracking and warning us about these storms—like NOAA and the National Hurricane Center—face budget cuts and layoffs. These cuts threaten our ability to prepare for and respond to disasters, putting millions at risk.

We call on our leaders to immediately restore NOAA funding, invest in infrastructure and emergency preparedness for vulnerable Caribbean and southeastern U.S. communities, and take bold action to address the fossil fuel pollution driving the climate crisis.
