The US government is considering imposing a 25% secondary tariff on India for purchasing Russian oil, a move that threatens the livelihoods of millions of workers, farmers, and small businesses in both countries. Such tariffs are unjustified and risk escalating trade tensions at a time when global cooperation is needed most.

The proposed 25% secondary tariffs on India for its energy trade with Russia are an act of economic coercion that will hurt ordinary people, not just governments. These tariffs threaten to escalate into a trade war, risking the livelihoods of farmers, exporters, and small businesses in both India and the United States.

India has already taken significant steps to diversify its energy imports, including a 51% increase in oil and gas imports from the US this year. Punitive tariffs disregard these efforts and undermine the spirit of international cooperation. Instead of imposing sanctions that deepen global divisions, the US should work with India to promote sustainable energy, fair trade, and mutual prosperity.
