Demand Real Action for Peace in Ukraine: No Backroom Deals, No Recognition for Aggressors

Related Article: Trump leaves Alaska summit with Putin empty-handed after failing to reach a deal to end Ukraine war - The Malta Independent - independent.com.mt - Friday, August 15, 2025, 11:58:58 PM Eastern Daylight Time

Target: President of the United States, U.S. Congress, Secretary of State

Goal: To urge the U.S. administration and Congress to reject any normalization with Russia that does not include a just and democratic peace for Ukraine, and to ensure Ukraine is directly involved in all negotiations about its future.

President Trump's recent summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska ended without any tangible progress toward ending Russia's war in Ukraine. Instead, the summit offered international legitimacy to Putin while sidelining Ukrainian voices and failing to secure even a ceasefire. We must demand that U.S. leadership center Ukrainian sovereignty, human rights, and a just peace—not the interests of aggressors.

The recent summit between President Trump and President Putin in Alaska was a missed opportunity to advance peace and justice for Ukraine. Instead of holding Russia accountable for its ongoing invasion and war crimes, the summit granted Putin the international recognition he craves, while excluding Ukraine from critical discussions about its own future.

Despite promises to end the war, President Trump left the summit empty-handed—no ceasefire, no withdrawal of Russian troops, and no agreement to respect Ukraine's sovereignty. Worse, the U.S. administration appeared to prioritize its own interests and relations with Russia over the urgent needs of the Ukrainian people. The exclusion of President Zelenskyy from the talks is an affront to the principle of 'nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.'

We cannot allow backroom deals that legitimize aggression or undermine the rights of those suffering under occupation and bombardment. The U.S. must stand firmly for international law, democracy, and the right of all people to self-determination. We call on our leaders to take immediate, public steps to support a just peace for Ukraine and to reject any normalization with Russia until it ends its war and respects Ukraine's territorial integrity.
