Target: Mayor of Washington, D.C., Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, President of the United States, Department of Housing and Urban Development
Goal: Demand an immediate halt to forced encampment clearances and the implementation of humane, housing-first solutions for people experiencing homelessness in Washington, D.C.
On August 18th, several homeless encampments in Washington, D.C. were cleared by local police under orders from the federal government, as part of a broader federal intervention in the District. Advocates and residents were caught off guard by the speed and lack of warning, resulting in the loss of personal belongings and increased trauma for those already struggling to survive.
Many individuals experiencing homelessness have no choice but to sleep outdoors, as rent in D.C. is unaffordable for most. While city officials claim to offer transportation to shelters and access to services, the reality is that these clearances disrupt lives and make it even harder for people to access the help they need. Forced removals do not address the root causes of homelessness and only serve to push people further into crisis.
We call on city and federal officials to stop these inhumane clearances and instead invest in permanent, supportive housing and robust social services. Everyone deserves dignity, safety, and a stable place to call home.
