Target: Governor Tina Kotek, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, Oregon State Legislature
Goal: Urge Governor Tina Kotek, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, and Oregon legislators to stand firm in defending Oregon’s sanctuary laws and resist federal attempts to coerce local compliance with unjust immigration enforcement.
Oregon has a proud history of protecting immigrant communities through strong sanctuary laws, first enacted in 1987 and expanded in 2021 with the Sanctuary Promise Act. These laws ensure that local resources are not used to enforce federal immigration policy, and that all Oregonians—regardless of immigration status—can live and work without fear of harassment or deportation.
Now, Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice are threatening legal action and the loss of federal funding if Oregon and its cities do not abandon these vital protections. Such threats not only undermine the safety and wellbeing of immigrant families, but also attack the democratic right of Oregonians to determine their own policies and values.
We call on our elected leaders to reject these attempts at federal coercion, defend Oregon’s sanctuary laws in court, and continue to protect the rights and dignity of all residents. Oregon must remain a place where immigrants are welcomed and supported, not targeted and criminalized.
