Target: President of the United States, US Congress, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Goal: Ensure full federal funding for hurricane monitoring, forecasting, and disaster relief, while advancing climate action to protect Caribbean and southeastern US communities.
Hurricane Erin, the first major storm of the Atlantic season, is bearing down on the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and other Caribbean nations. With sustained winds of 85 mph and the potential for rapid strengthening, Erin threatens to unleash heavy rains, dangerous flooding, and deadly surf conditions on communities already vulnerable from previous storms.
At the same time, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) faces budget cuts and layoffs as part of federal efforts to shrink government agencies. These cuts undermine our ability to forecast storms, warn the public, and coordinate disaster response—putting lives at risk, especially in marginalized and low-income communities.
Scientists warn that climate change, driven by fossil fuel emissions, is making hurricanes more intense and unpredictable. Last year, powerful storms like Hurricane Helene killed hundreds and devastated the region. We cannot afford to ignore these warnings or underfund the agencies tasked with keeping us safe.
We call on federal leaders to fully fund NOAA, FEMA, and all hurricane preparedness programs, and to invest in climate action that addresses the root causes of these intensifying storms.
