Goal: We call for open, transparent, and accountable diplomacy that prioritizes peace, Ukrainian sovereignty, and the voices of those most impacted by the conflict.
The Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has raised serious concerns about the direction of US foreign policy and the lack of transparency in negotiations that will determine the fate of millions of Ukrainians. The red-carpet treatment for Putin, a leader responsible for the ongoing invasion and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, stands in stark contrast to the dismissive approach shown to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
While Trump and Putin engaged in private discussions behind closed doors, reporters’ questions about civilian casualties and accountability were ignored. The absence of Ukrainian voices at the table and the lack of public communication about the terms being discussed undermine democratic values and the right of the public to know how decisions are being made on their behalf.
We demand that the US government uphold principles of transparency, prioritize the protection of Ukrainian civilians, and ensure that any negotiations do not come at the expense of Ukrainian sovereignty or justice for victims of war crimes.
