The draft 'Make America Healthy Again' (MAHA) report, promised as a roadmap to improve the health of America's children and families, falls short of the urgent action needed. While the report acknowledges the dangers of poor diet, chemical exposure, lack of physical activity, and overuse of medications, it fails to propose strong government action, instead recommending more studies and awareness campaigns.
Chronic diseases are on the rise, fueled by ultraprocessed foods, pesticide-laden crops, and cuts to vital health and nutrition programs. The Trump administration's proposed 40% cut to the NIH budget and the elimination of $1 billion for food banks and local food procurement further threaten the health of millions.
The MAHA report should have called for decisive reforms to food and farming policies, robust investment in public health, and regulation of harmful chemicals and ultraprocessed foods. Instead, it prioritizes industry interests and delays real solutions.
We demand that our leaders act now to protect public health, support local farmers, and ensure that every community has access to healthy food, clean air and water, and affordable healthcare.
