The recent summit in Alaska between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, held without the direct involvement of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy or European leaders, threatens to undermine the principle of 'nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.' Secretive negotiations and backroom deals risk legitimizing Russia’s illegal invasion and occupation, while sidelining the voices of those most affected by the war: the Ukrainian people.
History has shown that peace imposed without the consent of those directly impacted is neither just nor sustainable. Any agreement that forces Ukraine to cede territory or accept terms dictated by outside powers violates international law and the right to self-determination. The U.S. must stand with Ukraine and uphold democratic values by ensuring that all negotiations are transparent, inclusive, and respect Ukraine’s sovereignty.
We urge the U.S. administration and Congress to reject any deal that is made without Ukraine’s full participation, and to work with European allies to support a just peace—one that holds Russia accountable for its aggression and centers the needs and voices of Ukrainians.
