Target: U.S. Department of Justice, Congress, and the Office of the President
Goal: Restore and protect the District of Columbia's authority over its police department and demand an end to federal interference in local governance.
On June 7th, 2024, the Justice Department reached an agreement with Washington, DC authorities after a lawsuit challenged the Trump administration's attempt to seize control of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). This 'hostile takeover' saw the federal government deploy National Guard troops and install a hand-picked official as 'emergency' police commissioner, bypassing the city's elected leadership.
Such actions violate the spirit of the Home Rule Act, which grants DC residents the right to elect their own leaders and manage local affairs. Federal control over local policing not only disregards the city's autonomy but also sets a dangerous precedent for future interventions based on political motivations rather than public safety data.
Crime in DC is at its lowest in 30 years, according to local officials and police data, directly contradicting the fear-mongering narratives used to justify federal intervention. Residents have rejected these mischaracterizations and demand respect for their right to self-determination.
We call on federal authorities to respect DC's home rule, immediately end all federal interference in the MPD, and support full autonomy for the District of Columbia.
