Target: Gloucester Township Council
Goal: Urge the Gloucester Township Council to repeal the parental accountability law and invest in evidence-based community programs that support youth and families.
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about Gloucester Township's new law that holds parents criminally liable for their children's actions. While we all want safer communities and positive outcomes for young people, this approach is misguided and harmful.
Parental accountability laws disproportionately impact working-class families, single parents, and those already facing economic hardship. These policies do not address the root causes of youth involvement in the justice system, such as underfunded schools, lack of mental health services, and inadequate community resources.
Instead of punitive measures, Gloucester Township should focus on proven strategies: restorative justice programs, youth mentorship, after-school activities, and accessible family support services. Criminalizing parents only increases stress and instability, making it harder for families to thrive.
We call on the Township Council to repeal this law and invest in real solutions that uplift our youth and strengthen our community.
