Defend D.C.'s Right to Self-Govern: End Federal Takeover of Our Police

Related Article: 'D.C. Is Ours': Residents Vow To Fight Trump's Takeover Of City's Police - huffpost.com - Friday, August 15, 2025, 5:58:21 PM Eastern Daylight Time

Target: President of the United States, U.S. Department of Justice, Congress, and D.C. Mayor's Office

Goal: Restore D.C.'s autonomy, end the federal occupation of its police force, and protect the rights of residents to protest and govern themselves.

Washington, D.C. residents are facing an unprecedented federal intervention as President Trump has seized control of the city’s police force and flooded the streets with federal agents. This action undermines local democracy, intimidates residents, and threatens the safety and rights of all who call D.C. home.

For decades, the people of Washington, D.C. have fought for the right to self-governance. Now, that right is under attack. President Trump’s deployment of federal agents and seizure of local police authority—under the pretense of addressing a crime rate that is at a 30-year low—has led to checkpoints, the clearing of homeless encampments, and the intimidation of peaceful residents. This hostile takeover is not about public safety; it is about silencing dissent and undermining democracy.

Residents, activists, and allies from across the country have gathered in protest, demanding an end to this unlawful occupation. The D.C. Attorney General has taken legal action, but we must show broad public support for D.C.'s right to self-determination. We call on all people who believe in democracy and justice to stand with D.C. and demand an immediate end to the federal occupation of our city.

We urge Congress and federal authorities to respect D.C.'s autonomy, withdraw federal agents, and ensure that local communities have control over their own law enforcement. Our streets belong to the people, not to authoritarian rule.
