Target: Governor of Colorado, Colorado State Legislature, U.S. Congress, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
Goal: We call on state and local officials, as well as federal policymakers, to halt the expansion of ICE detention centers in Colorado and to invest in humane alternatives to detention that respect the rights and dignity of all people.
Recent reports have revealed that ICE is planning to open up to three new immigrant detention centers in rural Colorado, including reopening private prisons in Hudson and Walsenburg and expanding the Southern Ute Detention Center in Ignacio. These plans would more than triple Colorado's current detention capacity from 1,360 to over 4,000 beds, a move fueled by a $45 billion Congressional allocation for ICE facilities.
This expansion would further entrench the use of for-profit prisons, disproportionately harm immigrant communities, and divert resources away from proven, humane alternatives. Private prison corporations like CoreCivic and GEO Group stand to profit while families are separated and communities are destabilized.
We urge our elected officials and policymakers to reject these plans. Instead, Colorado should lead the way in supporting community-based alternatives to detention, investing in legal representation for immigrants, and prioritizing human rights and dignity over mass incarceration and deportation.
