Defend Democracy: Oppose Federal Takeover of D.C. Law Enforcement

Goal: Restore local control of D.C. law enforcement and protect the right to protest without federal interference.

Recent actions by the federal government have undermined the autonomy of Washington, D.C., and the right of its residents to self-governance and peaceful protest. The deployment of federal forces and the removal of local police authority threaten civil liberties and democratic participation.

The recent federal intervention in Washington, D.C.'s policing, including the order placing the police department under federal control and deploying the National Guard, is an attack on the democratic rights of D.C. residents. These actions disregard the will of the people and undermine the principle of local self-governance. Accusations that protesters are 'bought' or 'criminals' are attempts to delegitimize legitimate dissent and silence voices demanding justice and accountability.

Peaceful protest is a cornerstone of democracy, and D.C. residents have the right to express their views on public safety and policing without federal intimidation. We call on elected officials and the federal government to respect D.C.'s autonomy, halt the federal takeover of local law enforcement, and protect the rights of all people to organize and protest.
