Target: U.S. Government, European Union, Exxon Mobil, and International Policymakers
Goal: Prevent the reinstatement of Exxon Mobil and other Western oil companies in the Sakhalin-1 project, and demand that governments prioritize climate justice, human rights, and peace over fossil fuel profits.
The recent decree by Russian President Vladimir Putin, which could allow Exxon Mobil and other foreign investors to regain shares in the lucrative Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project, is a step backwards for climate justice, peace, and global human rights. This decision comes as Western leaders consider lifting sanctions on Russia in exchange for business opportunities, even as the war in Ukraine continues and the world faces a climate emergency.
Exxon Mobil exited Sakhalin-1 in 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, taking a $4.6 billion loss. Now, the possibility of their return—contingent on actions to lift sanctions and supply equipment—signals a dangerous prioritization of corporate profits over the urgent need for a fossil fuel phase-out and respect for international law.
We call on policymakers to reject any deal that allows fossil fuel companies to profit from conflict and environmental destruction. Instead, we urge a focus on peace, renewable energy, and global cooperation for a just transition.
