Demand Fair Trade and Economic Justice in Canada-Mexico Relations

Target: Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Government of Canada

Goal: We urge Prime Minister Carney to champion a new vision for Canada-Mexico trade that rejects harmful tariffs and puts people and the planet first.

As Prime Minister Mark Carney prepares to meet Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum this September, Canadians have a critical opportunity to call for a trade relationship that prioritizes workers, communities, and the environment over corporate profit.

The upcoming meeting between Prime Minister Carney and President Sheinbaum comes at a pivotal moment for North American trade. The current United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and the imposition of U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, and auto imports are harming workers and communities across our continent. These tariffs, introduced under Section 232, are driving up prices, threatening jobs, and undermining solidarity among our nations.

Canada and Mexico must stand together to demand fair trade rules that protect workers’ rights, strengthen environmental protections, and ensure that trade benefits all people, not just multinational corporations. We call on Prime Minister Carney to prioritize the needs of working people, Indigenous communities, and the environment in all trade negotiations with Mexico and the United States.

It is time for a new trade framework that rejects austerity, corporate giveaways, and environmental destruction. We demand a transparent, democratic process that centers the voices of those most affected by trade policy.
