Target: U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Congress
Goal: Urge the U.S. Department of Education and Congress to safeguard and expand DEI programs in educational institutions nationwide.
In February, the Department of Education issued memos demanding an end to all 'race-based decision-making' in schools, threatening to cut federal funding for institutions that continued DEI programs. These actions, justified by a broad interpretation of a recent Supreme Court decision, would have forced educators to choose between supporting their students and risking severe penalties.
These measures were met with widespread opposition from teachers, educational organizations, and advocacy groups. The American Federation of Teachers and the American Sociological Association successfully challenged the guidance in court, arguing that it imposed vague and subjective restrictions and amounted to government censorship of constitutionally protected speech.
Judge Stephanie Gallagher's ruling recognizes the chilling effect these policies had on millions of educators and students. While the ruling overturns the Trump administration's anti-DEI guidance, the fight for inclusive and equitable education is far from over. We must ensure that all students—regardless of race, background, or identity—have access to supportive and diverse learning environments.
We call on the Department of Education and Congress to protect and expand DEI initiatives, uphold Title VI protections, and guarantee that our schools and universities remain places of opportunity and belonging for everyone.
