Protect the Rights and Dignity of Unhoused People in Washington, DC

Target: President Donald Trump, Federal Law Enforcement Agencies, and the District of Columbia Government

Goal: Demand an immediate halt to the forced removal of unhoused people and call for humane, evidence-based solutions to homelessness in Washington, DC.

Recent federal actions have forcibly removed unhoused residents from encampments across Washington, DC, leaving thousands without shelter or support. These sweeps, ordered under the Trump administration, violate basic human rights and do nothing to address the root causes of homelessness.

On August 15, 2025, federal officers swept through Washington, DC, dismantling encampments and displacing more than 5,000 unhoused individuals. This action, carried out under President Trump’s orders, has left many without any place to go and has heightened fear and uncertainty among the city’s most vulnerable residents.

Blaming unhoused people for crime and forcibly removing them from public spaces does not solve homelessness—it only deepens the crisis. These sweeps violate the dignity and rights of individuals like David Harold Pugh, who simply want a safe place to exist. It is not illegal to be homeless, and no one should be criminalized for lacking housing.

We call on federal and local authorities to stop these inhumane actions and instead invest in real, compassionate solutions that address the root causes of homelessness. Every person deserves access to safe shelter, supportive services, and the chance to live with dignity.
