Our national parks are in 'survival mode.' Following deep budget cuts and a hiring freeze imposed by the current administration, the National Park Service has lost a quarter of its permanent staff. Critical positions remain vacant, and remaining employees are stretched thin—forced to cover multiple roles, from cleaning restrooms to running visitor centers. Essential behind-the-scenes work, such as protecting endangered species, maintaining trails, and preserving historic sites, is being neglected.
At Assateague Island, all lifeguard positions are unfilled, putting public safety at risk. Across the country, parks are unable to address invasive species, repair crumbling infrastructure, or provide adequate visitor services. Despite record-breaking attendance, our parks are being asked to do more with less, undermining the very mission of the NPS to preserve these lands 'for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.'
We urge immediate action to restore full funding and staffing to the National Park Service. Our parks are a national treasure, and they deserve the resources necessary to thrive.
