Protect and Strengthen Social Security for Future Generations

For 90 years, Social Security has provided essential financial support to retirees, people with disabilities, and survivors, lifting millions out of poverty. Despite its enduring popularity and success, the program faces a looming funding shortfall that threatens its future. Recent changes, such as making benefits tax-free, have accelerated the trust fund's insolvency date, putting millions at risk.

Politicians have long used Social Security as a campaign talking point, but too often they fail to enact the bold reforms needed to secure its future. Proposals to privatize or cut benefits have been rightly rejected by the public, but inaction is not an option. The answer is not to reduce benefits or raise the retirement age, but to strengthen and expand Social Security through fair and progressive funding solutions.

We call on our elected leaders to reject any cuts or privatization schemes and instead:

• Scrap the payroll tax cap so the wealthy pay their fair share
• Expand benefits to meet the real needs of seniors and people with disabilities
• Ensure long-term solvency through equitable revenue measures, not benefit cuts
• Protect Social Security from political attacks and ensure it remains a public, guaranteed benefit

Social Security is not a 'Ponzi scheme'—it is a vital social contract. We must act now to preserve and expand it for the next 90 years and beyond.
