Target: South African Department of Trade, Industry and Competition; U.S. Trade Representative; World Trade Organization
Goal: Urge the South African government and international trade bodies to take immediate action to protect jobs, challenge unfair tariffs, and prioritize policies that support workers and communities.
South Africa's economy, while showing signs of growth, remains fragile and deeply unequal. The recent imposition of a 30% tariff on South African exports by the United States threatens to derail progress, especially in the automotive and agricultural sectors. According to the Department of Trade, up to 30,000 jobs could be lost as a direct result of these tariffs.
With unemployment already at a staggering 33.2%, South African workers cannot afford further economic shocks. The livelihoods of thousands of families are at stake. Instead of punitive trade measures, we need international cooperation and policies that put people before profits.
We call on the South African government to protect workers by challenging these unfair tariffs at the World Trade Organization, expanding support for affected industries, and investing in job creation. We also urge the U.S. government to reverse these harmful measures and engage in fair, just trade practices.
Stand with South African workers and demand economic justice now!
