The recent decision by the Trump administration to intensify enforcement against wind farm developers over eagle deaths risks undermining the critical growth of renewable energy in the United States. While protecting golden and bald eagles is essential, research shows that wind turbines are not the leading cause of eagle mortality. Vehicle collisions, habitat loss, and other human activities pose greater threats to these iconic birds.
Wind energy developers are already required to obtain permits for incidental eagle deaths and to implement conservation measures, such as retrofitting power poles and exploring innovative technologies like blade painting and AI detection systems. These efforts demonstrate a commitment to coexistence between clean energy and wildlife protection.
Instead of politicizing eagle deaths and stalling renewable energy projects, we urge the Department of the Interior and the Fish and Wildlife Service to adopt science-driven, transparent policies. These should support ongoing research, incentivize best practices, and ensure accountability—without jeopardizing our transition to a sustainable energy future.
