In recent statements, President Trump has threatened to impose federal control over Chicago and other major cities led by Black mayors, targeting their sanctuary policies and progressive reforms. These threats come despite clear evidence that Chicago's investments in mental health, affordable housing, and workers' rights are reducing violent crime and improving lives.
Mayor Brandon Johnson and other city leaders have made it clear: Chicago will not cower or bend to intimidation or militarization. Instead, the city is investing in people—reopening mental health clinics, expanding paid time off for workers, abolishing the subminimum wage for tipped workers, and building thousands of affordable housing units. These policies are working, with historic declines in violent crime and stronger communities as a result.
