Target: President of the United States, Secretary of Commerce, Congressional Leadership, and the CHIPS Program Office
Goal: Ensure that any use of CHIPS Act funds to acquire an equity stake in Intel is accompanied by robust conditions: worker protections, a voice for labor on the board, job guarantees, and full transparency and accountability to the American people.
The US government is reportedly considering using taxpayer dollars from the CHIPS and Science Act to buy a stake in Intel, a company that has announced plans to lay off 24,000 workers by 2025. This move comes after Intel received nearly $8 billion in public funds, with little evidence that such subsidies have protected jobs or advanced the public good.
We cannot allow public money to be used as a blank check for corporate bailouts. Any government investment in Intel must come with enforceable guarantees for workers, including job security, fair wages, and a seat at the decision-making table. The public must have oversight over how these funds are used, and there must be clear, measurable benefits for communities and the broader economy—not just shareholders.
We demand that the administration and Congress ensure any deal with Intel is transparent, accountable, and centered on workers and communities. Corporate welfare without strings attached is unacceptable. We call for a new standard: public investment must mean public benefit.
