Target: The Presidents and Foreign Ministers of the United States, Russian Federation, and People's Republic of China
Goal: To pressure the governments of the United States, Russia, and China to urgently resume negotiations, re-sign, and strengthen the New START Treaty, and to commit to a pathway toward global nuclear disarmament.
For decades, nuclear arms control treaties like New START have been critical in preventing the proliferation and use of nuclear weapons. The recent suspension of the New START Treaty, coupled with escalating tensions and near-misses, has put the world at unprecedented risk. While recent statements from world leaders suggest a willingness to return to the negotiating table, words are not enough. We demand concrete action.
The New START Treaty, which capped deployed strategic nuclear warheads and bombs at 1,550 for both the U.S. and Russia, has been a cornerstone of international security. Its suspension and the lack of transparency around current nuclear arsenals threaten the fragile balance that has thus far prevented nuclear war. With China expanding its own nuclear arsenal, it is more urgent than ever to bring all nuclear powers into a robust, verifiable, and enforceable treaty framework.
We call on world leaders to recognize the catastrophic humanitarian and environmental consequences of nuclear war, and to prioritize people and planet over militarism. The only path forward is one of diplomacy, transparency, and a shared commitment to disarmament.
